Glasses or Contacts: Which is Right for You?

After a long-awaited trip to the eye doctor, you were given news that roughly 75% of the US population has heard before: you need corrective lenses in order to see properly. On the one hand, this is very good news because your days of squinting and headaches are coming to an end (YAY!). On the other, now you have to figure out whether you want to go with glasses or contact lenses.

While not an impossible decision, the choice between classes and contact lenses is often a matter of personal style, comfort, and ease of use. Both types of corrective lenses have their strengths and weaknesses, so take a look at this brief comparison to determine whether glasses or contact lenses are right for you.

Eyeglasses

Pros

Gone are the days when bespectacled individuals were constantly met with ridicule. Now, glasses can be a major fashion statement, a means of showing off your signature style by providing a pop of color or an air of sophistication to your chosen look. Some individuals who don’t even need corrective lenses enjoy wearing glasses just for the style points! Eyeglasses are also low-maintenance (simply slide on and off) and provide some measure of protection against wind, dust, and allergens.

Cons

Unfortunately, glasses do come with a few drawbacks. Due to the design of the lenses, eyeglasses do not affect your peripheral vision, so things you see out of the corner of your eye may still be blurry. Fingerprints, raindrops or snowflakes, and scratches in the lenses may impede your vision at times. Glasses are also not great for active lifestyles since they are prone to falling off or getting damaged when playing sports, going to the gym, or doing other activities.

Contacts

Pros

If you want to fly under the radar with clearer vision, then contacts are the perfect solution! They will give you an unobtrusive view of the world and more natural vision. You will not have to worry about contacts negatively affecting your game play on the field or during your morning job, and you can even keep them in while swimming! Contacts do not get foggy or blurry during temperature extremes and since there is no extra weight on your face, they are comfortable to wear.

Cons

While contacts are great for active individuals and never affect your wardrobe choices, they do have some down sides. Contacts require good hygiene, proper cleaning and disinfecting, and regular disposal to prevent infection. They can also become extremely uncomfortable if you have bad allergies, a torn lens, or something in your eye. Dry, itchy eyes also become more uncomfortable with contacts. Plus, if you happen to lose a lens and do not have a backup pair, you may be left without good vision until you can replace the lens.
