PROTECT YOUR EYES FROM SUN AND GLARE!!
Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a significant source in causing specific eye conditions. Yellowish deposits on the white part of the eye, called pinguecula, are often a result of chronic sun exposure. Numerous studies have shown a connection between the development of cataracts and sunlight exposure. Cataracts are a yellowing and clouding of the lens of the eye that lead to blurred vision. We have also found in recent years that the risk of macular degeneration is also related to UV radiation. Macular degeneration is a breakdown of the pigment in the back of the eye which leads to a loss of central vision. There are several ways to protect your eyes from the harmful rays of the sun. In choosing sunglasses it is important to make sure that they block 99-100% of UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays are known as “deep penetrating radiation” and are known to cause skin cancer after chronic exposure. UVB rays are shorter in wavelength and have been linked to sunburn and skin cancer as well. Our practice offers a wide variety of sunglasses that do provide UVA/UVB blocking capabilities and many of these sunglasses can be made with your prescription. We also offer a type of lens called Transitions®, made by Varilux, which shift from light to dark tint depending on the amount of light they are exposed to. Transitions® turn darker 20% faster than the prior generation of photochromic lenses and they also turn 25% darker. They also go back to their original clear state 3 times faster than the previous technology did years ago.
Glare is also an important condition that can prohibit someone from seeing clearly. Glare produces eyestrain, headache and discomfort. It causes an increase in brightness and a reduction in color saturation. This makes objects viewed in the presence of glare appear washed out. Did you know that 1/3 of all traffic accidents are attributed to glare disability??
When light waves hit reflective surfaces they become “polarized” and the waves then move in a horizontal direction. Here at Spindel Eye Associates we offer lenses that are known as “polarizing lenses” which have a vertical filter that eliminates the glare from the horizontal polarized light. Polarizing lenses are an excellent choice for people who enjoy spending time outside and participate in water or winter sporting activities. Please ask our opticians about our sunglasses, Transitions® lenses or polarizing lenses when you visit our optical shop.
NUTRITION AND THE EYE
The trend of the American public nowadays is to live a healthier lifestyle. Besides good diet and exercise, many are turning to vitamin, mineral and herbal supplements to aid in overall “good health.” It is often times very confusing and overwhelming when shopping for vitamins, supplements and herbals. This is due not only to the sheer number of products available in local drugstores and department stores but also confusing as to which supplements are recommended for all the various health conditions that exist.
So, how does Eye Health relate to all of this? Are supplements available for certain eye conditions or diseases and which supplements are the right ones to use? Here are some helpful tips and recently approved guidelines to help you select the supplements that are right for you and your eyes. #1: Age Related Macular Degeneration: a progressive irreversible eye disease that affects central vision causing slow loss of sight over time centrally (not peripherally).
