What Is Color Blindness?

Color vision deficiency is more common in men than it is in women. There are also a number of risk factors that can make an individual more prone to the condition, including:
- Family history of color blindness
- Specific eye diseases
- Health conditions including Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, or diabetes
- Certain prescription medications
What Causes Color Blindness?
The majority of individuals with color blindness are born with it, as color vision deficiency is often tied to genetics. Alternative causes of color vision deficiency may include injury or illness, such as:
- Retinal detachment
- Eye injuries as a result of laser exposure
- Brain tumors that compromise the optic nerve or brain pressure
- Radiation
- Worsening cataracts
